Maritime restaurant in Holyhead

The "Sea Shanty Cafe" in Holyhead, Wales, is a charming restaurant characterized by its maritime atmosphere and diverse culinary offerings. Located in the picturesque coastal region of Trearddur Bay, near Holyhead, it has become a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike since its opening in July 2016. The building was designed with the aim of enhancing the area and creating a modern, accessible venue infused with a touch of nostalgia. The interior is a real eye-catcher: inspired by beaches and boats, it combines rustic elements with quirky details such as nautical artifacts, handcrafted decorations, and a restored nickelodeon from the Edwardian era. Notably, the ice cream parlor in the entrance area delights both children and adults with its retro charm. In summer, the spacious terrace invites relaxation, while the restaurant also scores points for its cozy warmth during inclement weather.

Culinary offerings at the "Sea Shanty Cafe" range widely, from breakfast to dinner, encompassing both British classics and international influences. A highlight is the "Moules Frites," a dish featuring fresh mussels in a white wine-garlic cream sauce, served with crispy fries and toasted sourdough—an indulgence that emphasizes the restaurant's maritime location. The "Beer Battered Cod Fillet," a traditional fish and chips, is also popular, with the fish encased in a crispy batter paired with homemade chips and creamy tartar sauce. For meat lovers, the "10oz Ribeye Steak" served with grilled tomatoes and mushrooms stands out for its juicy quality. Vegetarians can enjoy dishes like "Patatas Bravas," served with a spicy tomato sauce and aioli, bringing a Spanish flair to the menu. Desserts are another highlight, especially the "Sticky Toffee Pudding," a warm, sweet pastry accompanied by vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce, regarded as a true comfort food.

The drinks menu is equally varied, offering not only a selection of beers and wines but also homemade lemonades and coffee specialties. The restaurant takes particular pride in its ice cream creations, served in the traditional ice cream parlor—a legacy that harkens back to the origins of the cafe. The "Sea Shanty Cafe" places great emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with mussels often coming from the nearby Menai region, although they can also be sourced from other parts of the UK when necessary. It is also dog-friendly, making it an ideal stop for walkers exploring the coastline.

Visited the Sea Shanty last night for my mums 70th birthday. First impressions were good, really nice restaurant/bar. Drinks and food orders were taken and that was were it all went wrong. Never have I had food in a restaurant so bad, orderer the mussels in white wine garlic and cream. No taste to the mussels at all. The sauce had no body and I think the were cooked in milk. Main Course was House Smoked Chicken topped with garlic butter. What actual arrived was the strangest coloured chicken I have ever seen with cold butter on top. Worst tasting chicken I have ever tried. Inedible. Server never once came to the table to ask if food was ok, when we told the server about the food, he said he would let the chef know. No feedback at all. £28 spend on food and had to stop at the indian takeaway over the road for my dinner.

Ate at the Shanty today. Scampi & Chips, Chilli Tortilla, Fish & Chips, Pizza, and kids meals ALL gorgeous! Dessert was already decided as you pass the ice-cream fridges on the way in lol Funky 'lil Shack! Staff were amazingly friendly and attentive! We will be back!! Edit Our first time dining here was 2018 when we first visited Trearrdur Bay. We have visited every year except "that year", and every time we have dined at least 2 or 3 times at the Sea Shanty Cafe. It has maintained its high standards of food and service each and every time over that time span. We simply love it here! All of the accoutrements which make this place amazingly decorated just holds your fascination every time you sit down in this place. We have another 6 days left so undoubtedly you will see us again!

Friendly staff, good atmosphere, varied menu for all, including vegetarian options, remember to look at the cake counter, and fab ice cream, good for kids. Dog friendly (lots of dogs) inside until 6.00, and they can provide water, and you can buy dog ice-cream.

Such tasty vegan food for takeaway. Berry and salted caramel ice cream. Vegan fried chicken was the best I’ve had and seasoned fries were delicious. The ladies working there were lovely with our wee one.

This gem of a cafe is huge. We found the sea shanty after exploring the area. The food is amazing our first visit was a light snack chip butty. Biggest I'd eaten the wife struggled. We returned the following day, to try something different. It would be nearly impossible to leave hungry. If your in the area or don't mind the travel. This cafe has it all. Great tasty food. Wonderful friendly staff.

Best Fish and Chips by far. I love my fish and chips and this by a million miles was the best Fish and Chips I have had in over 5yrs. The Fish (cod) was perfectly cooked, brilliant white, and moist Fish, batter was lovely I would recommend without a shadow of a doubt. Big shout out to Will our Server, his reccomndations were spot on. I'm guessing the burgers were another good choice as we seen lots of these coming from the kitchen. Would highly recommend. At the moment they have a discount running Monday to Friday. Enjoy 👌
